Week 3 Inquiry: Short Story of Interest – Push for Gay Sex To Be A Crime In Indonesia

Week 3 COMM11007

Indo Gay

Lead of the story: Indonesia’s Constitutional Court is considering whether to make gay sex a crime after accepting a judicial review petition from Islamic activists.

Summary: Indonesia considers a judicial review petition to make gay sex a crime in effort to have ‘clearer norms.’ A group who calls themselves Family Love Alliance is pushing to criminalise gay people in Indonesia.

The chairman of Family Love Alliance says “They can live but do not show what is their lifestyle.”

The LBGT community already face stigma and discrimination in Indonesia. Homosexuality is currently not illegal in the country.

A group opposed to the proposal plans to contest Family Love Alliance next month in Indonesia’s Constitutional Court.

Identifying the 5W’s and

Who: Gay people living in Indonesia

What: Conflict of human rights, discrimination against gays

Where: Indonesia, current developments

Why: To criminalise gay sex

How: Family Love Alliance Islamic activists and Indonesia’s Constitutional Court

Story of interest

I find this story of personal interest and hypercritical, given that Indonesia also plays a part in the United Nations and holds a seat on the Human Rights Council.

It disgusts me that Australia gives billions of dollars to Indonesia in the form of foreign aid, yet they hate us and now want to throw people in jail because they are gay!

Indonesia is a muslim majority country and to think that our government can turn a blind eye to Islamic sharia law practices is just ludicrous!

Where’s the UN now? And where are the human rights activists? The silence is deafening.

It is yet another reason Australia needs to exit the UN!
